My foray into AI generated art

I’ve held off on sharing any of what I’ve been creating through AI image generation for all of the obvious reasons (e.g. copyright and theft concerns and the impact on artists.) I respect each person’s stance on this, and I know it’s a debate that could rage on for a long time, and it’s not one I’m going to go into depth on in this post. Instead, I wanted to share my journey with AI generated art and what I’m doing with it.

I’ve never been good at creating visual art. It’s something that has always bothered me, because I have an extremely vivid imagination. I could picture something so clearly in my mind, but the connection from brain to hand to paper seems to go via a mystery Willy Wonka machine and what comes out is certainly not what my brain sent in! And that’s ok, not everyone can make art, the same way not everyone can run fast or play the piano or keep their plants alive (*cough cough*).

But what I am kind of ok at is using my words. And that for me is the real appeal to AI generated art, because it relies on my ability to properly describe with words the vision I have in my mind, rather than trusting pen on paper or pixels on screen in Photoshop.

What has followed has been a fun adventure into creating and making up new worlds. I predominantly use a website called NightCafe, which is based here in Australia, and use their daily challenges as a way to learn about generating prompts (i.e. the best way to use my words to make what I want to see). There are groups in the community who share their prompts, which can be a really amazing way to learn, and tend to lead me down a rabbit-hole of creating multiple images in that style, like these:

I wanted to make this post because I would like to share what I’ve been creating, but I also wanted to be able to give anyone who is really against this type of creating a heads up about it so that they can unfollow me if they choose to. I will not be offended at all, like I said I understand this can be a sensitive topic for some people. But this is also my blog and my space to share what I’m up to, and this is something that I’d really enjoying and want to share with others. I will always tag any posts with AI generated art in the with the tag and category of ‘AI Art’ so that you can filter accordingly if this isn’t your cup of tea.

For those who are interested, you can check out my profile on Night Cafe at https://creator.nightcafe.studio/u/professional_unicorn .

I’m currently working on a couple of things that I’m hoping to share soon. One is a silly cats calendar for my friend using pictures of her and her friends’ cats; a series of macabre cats (because why not?!); and a series based on poetry I have written.

For now, I hope you’re all well, and I’ll be back again soon!
